Few people know the story of Claudette Colvin (Born September 5, 1939, in Montgomery, Alabama). When she was 15, Colvin was arrested in March 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat to a white person. She was arrested and became one of four plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle, which ruled that Montgomery’s segregated bus system was unconstitutional. Colvin was the first to really challenge the law. In early 1955, Claudette Colvin, a 15 year old black girl was dragged off a bus in Montgomery and arrested for not giving up her seat to a white person. The NAACP agreed to take up the Colvin incident as a test case. They dropped the case after discovering she was pregnant. The decision for the NAACP to give up this particular case is covered in controversy. Bottomline, they didn’t see her as the “right fit” to represent the community; hair wasn’t straight enough, skin wasn’t fair enough, and so on… (Taken with Instagram)
